Limnoiketes paludinatans Parrington, 1948
Taxonomic History—Limnoiketes paludinatans is based on a
complete skull (UMZC T214; Fig. 7) from the LAZ at Harrismith
(Free State Province, South Africa). Parrington (1948) distinguished
L. paludinatans from Lydekkerina huxleyi by the
presence of a broader and deeper skull, a shorter ‘nose,’ a wider
temporal region, larger orbits, larger interpterygoid vacuities,
and differences in the proportions of the basicranial region, the
clavicles, and the interclavicle. Kitching (1978) and Cosgriff
(1984) tentatively accepted L. paludinatans as a valid taxon. In
his reappraisal of the Lydekkerinidae, Hewison (1996) reexamined
the holotype of L. paludinatans and concluded that it was a
valid taxon.
Shishkin et al. (1996) regarded Limnoiketes paludinatans as a
junior synonym of Lydekkerina huxleyi, and suggested that it
represented a juvenile individual. In particular, they regarded
the presence of a short interorbital distance and a curved, steeply
sloped cheek outline in occipital view as juvenile characters observed
in small individuals attributable to L. huxleyi. Two other
characters noted by Shishkin and colleagues (1996), namely the
lack of an interorbital depression and the marked pterygoid
flange, were considered to represent individual variation.
Schoch and Milner (2000), in contrast to Shishkin and colleagues
(1996), tentatively accepted Limnoiketes paludinatans as
a valid taxon, and distinguished it from other lydekkerinids using
the following suite of characters: (1) skull higher than in other
genera; (2) short tabulars; (3) distinct flange on the pterygoid;
and (4) semicircular rather than oval interpterygoid vacuities.
